Web Lesson
<握り方>
自分のグリップが見つければ、理想なゴルフが近づきますよ^^;
Aloha everybody!!! Thank you to those readers who are stopping by. As some of you may know, I’m from Hawaii. For those of you who don’t know me please come to lesson and ask me about anything from golf to things to do in Hawaii. However for this web lesson I wanted to talk a little about the so-called *Grip.* I’ll try to be as simple as possible and I hope to get those small kinks that you have been worrying about to be free and clear.
Basic grip points:
First I would like to cover the most important parts of the grip. The grip is considered to be the one point where the body and club come into contact. Of course there are many ways to grip the club however from person to person the grip should basically be the same. If you are able to grip the club properly you will be able to translate that into power and control for your golf swing.
About the grip and how to grip the club:
The swing consists of a lot of power. So, the grip needs to be held so that it doesn’t slip out of your hands. The grip should be held in your fingers and avoid gripping with your palm. The power of the fingers are stronger than you think. If try to put the club in the center of your palm and grip the club, then, compare it to gripping the club with the club set in the middle of your fingers. You’ll find a significant difference. So, we want to keep the grip set in the fingers and not the palm.
Let’s try something simple. With your 4 fingers of the left hand (for right-handers), except the thumb, set the club in the middle of your fingers and feel the weight of the club by bending the wrist up and down until you feel a balance with the 4 fingers and the club. After you have a good feel for the club set your thumb on the top of the club. The space between your thumb and your pointer should make a “V” shape. Lastly, with your right hand make the same “V” shape and place the grip of the club in your fingers.
About the grip type:
As you all have seen or know, there are 3 ways to grip the club. So when you grip the club you wonder what am I going to do about my pinky finger? Well there are 3 options that you can choose from. You can overlap the grip, interlock the grip or grip with all fingers (baseball grip). If you are wondering, “What do the pros do?” Most of them choose the interlock or overlap. I personally recommend the same because the position of the grip will remain consistent in comparison to the baseball grip where the position of the hands are vulnerable to change.
About the grip style:
There are some points that you may want to be careful about. As I mentioned earlier, there is a “V” shape with both hands. However, just for now let’s cover some quick points about the bottom hands “V” shape. The direction that the “V” shape points is up towards the upper part of the body. If this “V” is pointing at the bottom right of the neck it is considered to be a neutral grip. If the “V” is pointing right of the bottom right part of the neck it is considered to be a strong grip and anything left of the neutral point is a weak grip. But just to be clear, the only that that you need to be careful about is to make sure your grip style is from neutral to strong. The reason behind this is because in order to use the wrist cock and develop speed, the club needs to be gripped from neutral to strong. Please keep this point in mind when you are looking down at the “V” shape of the bottom hand.
To sum it all up, we covered the important points of the grip, how to grip the club, the grip type and the grip style. There are many questions regarding what is right and wrong. But these basic points will help you to create a better foundation. If you are not sure and have no idea about what to do, come by and ask about it. I look forward to meeting all of you. Until then… Ryan.
